RUGBY LEAGUE

Rugby league in Australia has been one of Australia’s most popular sports since it started being played there in 1908. It is the dominant winter football code in the states of New South Wales and Queensland.

Commonly known as "league" or simply "football", and sometimes referred to as "the greatest game of all", it is traditionally seen as a "working man's sport" with its roots in the working class communities of Northern England, compared to rugby union which has its roots in prestigious English public schools. It was actually created, or invented, in 1823, when an English schoolboy picked up the ball during a football (soccer) match and ran it into the goal. People found this hilarious and adapted this form of play into its own sport.

The Australian Women's Rugby League was formed in 1993, which only achieved affiliation with the Australian Rugby League in 1998. This is in contrast to the men's competition which has existed since 1908. Unfortunately, the initial public reaction to women playing contact sports proved negative but playing local sport on the weekend is a tradition that has embodied Australian culture for decades and although women still face discouragement from competing in rugby league due to its aggressive nature this perception continues to change each year.

As women start to take on this opportunity and start to receive greater recognition for their achievements on the sporting field, the rugby league stars of today are laying a platform for future generations of young girls. Of the 172,000 participants in 2004, 5% were female but in 2018, there was a 32% increase in female participation in rugby across all age groups and we had the emergence of an NRL Premiership competition and a stand-alone State or Origin match!

WHY PLAY LEAGUE?

TEAM WORK

You will learn to be part of a team where every player relies on every other player to back them up no matter what. Every single time. Your team mates will literally put their bodies on the line for you. They will take a beating for you, they will defend and protect you.

They will sacrifice themselves for each other and you will do the same for them in return. There is not one single player on that field who’s contribution is more important than any other. No precious Quarterback or Striker.

WELLBEING

You will learn to maintain your focus and discipline for every second you’re on the field. You will learn to constantly analyse what’s going on around you. To become situationally aware, to a level, you never expected possible.

You will become fit, strong and conditioned to a level of controlled violence and physicality you never knew you could tolerate. Learn to fight through pain. You will learn to find something extra when you thought you were physically and psychologically exhausted.

COMMUNITY

You learn level of respect for others you never knew existed. You will form a tunnel and clap an injured player from the field, no matter which team they play for. You will help your opposition player to their feet seconds after you drove them into the ground.

Our club are stronger together, and we will work with you every step of the way to constantly help you improve yourself both on and off the field.
